How I Earned $37,000 on Zazzle In One Year: A Case Study (How Does Zazzle Work)

This post is all about how Elke earned $37k in one year on Zazzle. We want to talk about that so you can gain an understanding of what it takes to do that on the platform and how does Zazzle work.

Not only do we have a lot of our own Zazzle storefront experience under our belts (14 years worth!), but we’ve also helped our clients make major sales on Zazzle. We can’t make income claim statements, but we CAN tell you the numbers behind our clients’ earnings. In the past four years, our clients have brought home a combined $3 million in earnings.

That can be attributed to Elke’s 5 Zazzle Strategies™ that we use and teach our clients how to use to succeed on Zazzle. That’s how Elke jumped from making just $2,300 one year to $37k the next. After doing so, she kept getting the same question: “how did you do it and how does Zazzle work!?” So, let’s answer that question below.

Our General Tips for Zazzle Success ( Zazzle tutorial )

Before we dive into How does Zazzle work and The 5 Strategies™ we use on the platform, we want to go over some general tips that will help drive your success on the platform:

– Treat your storefront as a business – not just a hobby: Once you make this shift,  it’ll be a lot easier to get a higher return on the time you invest on the platform

– Let go of your artist ego: This can be tough to do, but it’s important to do in order to expand your reach and open more doors of selling on Zazzle

– Understand how Zazzle is different from other print on demand platforms: We did a lot of research before we committed to selling on Zazzle. You should do the same and ensure you really understand the platform as you get ready to embark on your online business adventure.

Elke’s Journey - How I Earned $37,000 on Zazzle In One Year

In 2008, Elke made only $2,300 on the Zazzle platform. Then, in 2009, she increased her income by quite a bit, generating $37k in take-home income through her sales. That’s quite a difference, but it came thanks to a lot of hard work.

During that time, Elke worked hard to figure out the business size of Zazzle and really took her storefront from hobby to business. That’s how she was able to ramp up her income.

That’s when people started asking her what the secret to her success was, and that’s where our 5 winning Zazzle Strategies come into play. We dive into them below.

Strategy #1 - Establish

The first strategy falls under, “establish.” Here, you set the groundwork for your storefront and build your skills to become an entrepreneur. This is where things start to shift from hobby to business, as we talked about above.

Learning these skill sets is so important, and this is where you educate yourself about running a business and figure out how to set up a Zazzle store correctly. It’s also the time to get to know your customer avatar, how to tag things correctly, decipher your niche, and work on your branding.

Essentially, this is the time to research and learn what your customer wants and what they don’t, which allows you to adjust your behavior accordingly.

Strategy #2 - Create

This phase is all about the creation of your product suite that you feature in your storefront. Instead of buying inventory, you have to create it digitally in your store. You’ll want to create only items that will sell on Zazzle and not waste your time on things that are unnecessary and that won’t generate income.

We know from years of experience and analytics what the buying trends are and how to take action on those. For instance, Elke was able to capitalize on the sale of monograms on the Zazzle platform early on, which has driven a lot of income for her.

Depending on how you want to serve the marketplace, that’s how you will create your product suite.

Strategy #3 - Announce

The announce strategy is all related to promotion and promoting your products. It’s important to promote things and make your storefront known internally and externally.

Something we run into with our clients is people not wanting to promote their products or storefront because they find it to be salesy. But you don’t have to do it in that way – you can do it within your boundaries.

Whatever way you decide to “announce” your products, it helps get products out there and build your brand. We’ve found that the easiest way to do this is on Pinterest. It simply makes a lot of sense to promote there because it’s where people go to find ideas of things to buy.

This is also where you make sure things are labeled correctly with the right keywords and tags, which makes it easier for customers to find your products.

Strategy #4 - Align

Now is when you align your business goals and mindset together with your Zazzle business. People usually skip this step, but it’s a really important one!

Everything you do – including your business – should feel cohesive to you. There needs to be a shift from it being all about working hard and constantly hustling to it being more about an alignment with your values and lifestyle.

You’re building a business around how you want to live, and we know that you want time to enjoy life and do things you WANT to do while running your business.

Ensuring everything is in alignment makes it manageable and allows you to still enjoy your life. For that to happen, you need to have that alignment with your goals. To do that, you need to make plans to reach your goals, or else it’s just hoping. Mere hope alone doesn’t build a business, so this is a very important step to take.

Strategy #5 - Analyze

This is the last strategy, and it is sadly always ignored. It’s all about the numbers and being honest with yourself, which -admittedly – can be tough to do.

When you’re so determined to make your Zazzle storefront work, it can be hard to look at what’s not working and, at the same time, it’s easy to forget that we don’t have all the answers.

Nonetheless, it’s so important to analyze what’s working and what’s not in our online business. If we don’t do this, we can’t take action to correct the things that aren’t working and capitalize on the things that are. This is what Elke was originally missing in her business, and when she started implementing it, she was really able to ramp up her income.
