Mindfulness Tool #1: Meditation.

We all deal with a variety of stressors, distractions, and responsibilities throughout our day. It can often feel like our minds are always running, and this can make it difficult to focus and relax. Meditation can help you center and ground yourself. It doesn’t have to last very long to be effective. Even just pausing what you’re doing to take a few deep breaths to recenter can be helpful.

When you’re starting to practice meditation, don’t beat yourself up when you get distracted. This is a normal part of the process. We encourage you to start with short periods of time and then work up from there. Eventually, you will find that focusing and doing effective meditation becomes easier. A few minutes of meditation can have a profound effect on the rest of your day.

Mindfulness Tool #2: Journaling.

Journaling is an excellent way of clearing your mind, unburdening yourself from negative thoughts, and reflecting on what matters most to you. Don’t think your journaling has to be done a certain way. There are many ways to go about journaling. You can write down some affirmations or things that you are grateful for. Another way would be to do a “data dump.” If you’re struggling with something, just allow your thoughts to flow onto the page. This will help you get clarity around the issue you are dealing with.

You’ll be surprised at what you discover when you journal. We carry a lot of unconscious burdens. When we feel stressed and overwhelmed, it’s hard to gain clarity because of the “noise” of thoughts in our heads. But when you put those thoughts down on paper, it helps you take a step back and look at what’s going on. You’ll gain valuable perspective. Remember that you don’t have to solve every problem at once! If you take a few minutes each day to journal, you will gain insight bit by bit.

Mindfulness Tool #3: Being in the moment.

We think we are 100% present in the present moment but our subconscious is carrying many messages which distract us. Much of the time, we worry about something that’s going to happen in the future, or we’re caught up in thoughts about something in the past. Technology also takes away our attention from the present. Each ding on our phone pulls us away from the task at hand.

It’s important to remember that the present moment is all we have. We can’t control the future or the past. It takes conscious effort, but you can work to stay in the present moment. You don’t have to let distractions sabotage you.

Mindfulness Tool #4: Turning a negative into a positive.

Unfortunately, bad things will happen to us. That’s part of life. We can’t control that, but we can control how we respond. What you have the power to do is take a negative experience and resolve to learn from it going forward. This is not to negate or dismiss your experience, but it is a way not to let its negativity continue to affect you.

We encourage you to reframe negative thoughts and experiences. For example, if you’re stuck thinking something like, “It’s such a cold, dreadful day outside. I hate this weather so much,” try to reframe it in a positive light. You can say to yourself, “I’m thankful that the sun is shining even though it’s cold. I’m grateful to hear the birds singing and that I have a nice view of the outdoors.” That’s a very simple example, but it shows you how you might begin to reframe your thoughts. When you focus on the positive, you’ll be in a more positive state of mind.
