The 6 Best Passive Income Ideas to Make an Extra $1,000 Per Month

In this post, we’ll (Jen and Elke) talk about something that’s interesting to anyone looking to make a little extra money. We’re going to cover the six best passive income ideas to make an extra $1,000 in a month.

This is something outside of our usual Zazzle content, and we’ve tried a lot of these methods, so we wanted to provide some helpful information and a perspective on each of these unique passive income ideas.

We know that this extra cash flow sounds pretty appealing – who doesn’t love a little extra income, after all? So, let’s get into it!

passive income ideas 2022

1- Affiliate Marketer/Blogger

Jen has had firsthand experience doing this. It’s where you sign up for a certain affiliate marketing program and refer shoppers to these big brand sites. Some brands that participate in this off the top of our heads are Home Depot and Walmart. How it works is you create an affiliate link and earn a commission when people buy from your link.

One downside is that you have to hit a certain sales goal on a lot of these or else you won’t be able to stay in the program. That means that you’ll need to have a strong following or audience to ensure those conversions.

There are also platforms that are more for services and online items rather than physical items. You can sell these services and use an affiliate program to make money. It almost acts like a web posting service. Shopify is a good example of this. If you’re one of their affiliate partners, you can make $2k each time you refer someone to the site and they sign up.

Keep in mind that you have to be a good marketer and have influence to be successful in this side gig, so that’s definitely something to note.

2- Facebook or Instagram Influencer

The next side gig is being a Facebook or Instagram influencer. A lot of people in the millennials or younger age group are in this market. This is where you use your social media account to advertise items and become a brand ambassador. Here, brand names will pay influencers to post about them because it gets information out to their audience.

Payment rates for this are largely based on numbers, which puts a lot of pressure on you to grow your audience, create viral content, be in the moment, and keep up with the changing scope of social media. Whew – that’s a lot, right?!

In doing this, remember that ANYTHING can go viral – it can be all about your passion. Leverage your interests in your content if you’re pursuing this route. But, keep in mind that you have to be extroverted or willing to put yourself out there on social media to do this. It could be a great passive income idea, though, if you have the right personality for it as well as a strong following!

3- Freelancer

Next up is the side hustle of being a freelancer. This is widely effective for individuals who act as graphic designers or product mock-up freelancers.

In this gig, you work for someone else, completing tasks they request or assign you. They may pay you an hourly rate or per task, depending upon what you agree on upfront.

The platform UpWork is a great way for freelancers to connect with individuals seeking these services and to build a reputation for delivering quality services.

For this gig, it’s all pieces of work that can fit around your day job and overall lifestyle. The downside is, though, that you’re working for someone else and dependent on them to hire you and also dependent on whether or not they like your work.

This can be harder to convert into a long-term gig and it’s SO important here to set boundaries. Create a contract to ensure that you’re making the money your worth for the work you’re submitting.

Another thing that can be troublesome about being a freelancer, especially in the design space, is that you’re working once and getting paid once. On a platform like Zazzle, you’re working (or designing) once and then getting paid many times, because your design stays in your storefront and can sell time and time again. That’s definitely something to think about in regards to this particular passive income idea, as you undoubtedly want to make the most of your time.

4- Drop Shipping Business

This side gig comes through a platform like Shopify. Here, you create a website and then you’re responsible for marketing and selling products on there. Then, you work with a wholesaler who fulfills the sale and takes a commission from it.

This can be very lucrative, but it takes a lot of active work to market and sell the products. Plus, you likely will need to make a certain amount of money on a monthly basis to stay in the program, which puts a certain amount of pressure on you.

There’s definitely a lot of earning potential here, though – in fact, it’s unlimited! So, it’s something to consider if you’re willing to do the marketing and selling to make it work.

5- Etsy Maker

We’ve talked about selling on Etsy here before, and this is the next passive income idea that we want to mention today. If you’re unfamiliar with Etsy, it’s an online marketplace where people sell mostly physical products.

This platform is great for people who love creating and seeing their physical product throughout and being involved in the whole lifespan of a sale. However, it takes a lot of work to fulfill orders.

We actually work with a lot of people that come to Zazzle because they’re overwhelmed by the Etsy workload. On top of that, a lot of Etsy makers are having trouble being found on the platform by customers the way they once were. Finally, sellers have to pay to have their listings on the platform, which is another downside to consider.

6- Print on Demand Business

The final passive income idea we’re talking through is Print on Demand Businesses. Zazzle is one of these – and there are so many others like it. Red Bubble and Society6 are other notable print-on-demand sites, but they differ from Zazzle because they don’t allow customers the same customization parameters that Zazzle encompasses.

Here, it virtually looks like there’s a physical product that shoppers are viewing. However, it doesn’t exist yet.

On Zazzle, customers have the ability to customize the product designs or leave them as they are. Once they place their order, that’s when the product is actually physically created. This is a very economical and eco-friendly business model with limited waste.

Plus, Zazzle takes care of everything on the backend of a sale, from shipping to sourcing products to interacting with customers. How nice is that, right? There’s also no fee per listing like there is on Etsy. Instead, there’s simply a 100k listing limit per Zazzle creator account

Zazzle is a done-for-you business model that allows you to make a passive income. While it definitely still takes work to make money here, it’s an efficient business model that you can tap into, even if it’s just as a side hustle.

Our clients have made over $3 million in Zazzle payouts in the last four years, which means they’ve sold over $30 million worth of products on the platform. Pretty impressive, right?
