Why You Need Evergreen Products to Profit on Zazzle

In episode 26 of The Creative and Ambitious Entrepreneur Podcast, we’re discussing why you need to have evergreen products to make consistent, predictable income on Zazzle. Zazzle is an online e-commerce platform that you as a creative can make money on. We, Jen and Elke Clarke, have been selling products on Zazzle for 14 years now and have sold $15 million dollars-worth of Zazzle products. Most of these sales are what we consider evergreen products, products that sell month after month, year after year.

Definition of an evergreen product and seasonal product.

First, we want to make sure you have a solid understanding of what “evergreen” and “seasonal” mean. Any product that sells within a specific season of the year is going to be labeled seasonal. This can include holiday products, but it can also apply to things like back to school, prom or graduations. Keep in mind that seasonal products are what sell for a short period of time over the course of a year. While it’s a nice boost when these products sell, they are unpredictable, and you can’t rely on them as the major source of income for your business.

Evergreen products are the ones that sell consistently monthly and yearly without needing an occasion that is seasonal to be the reason someone buys. It’s important to have evergreen products to profit in your online e-commerce business because they can sell consistently at any time of the yearly sales cycle. Once these evergreen products sell consistently in your Zazzle store you can begin to predict how much money you will make in future months.

Engage, LEARN, IMPLEMENT

How the definition of seasonal and evergreen products may change.

Certain situations can change what you might define as seasonal or evergreen. COVID-19 is a perfect example. Before COVID-19, events like weddings, graduations and birthdays happened more often at certain times of the year. With the ongoing pandemic, people are under various restrictions. These events are now being held at different times of the year that are unpredictable versus in the past.

If you have been on Zazzle for several years, you can track how your products sell monthly over a year to start to see patterns. You can start to identify your evergreen products because they sell consistently.

If you are newer to Zazzle, you won’t know this yet but you can make predictions based on what the average customer buys as evergreen products and start posting them in your store.

Evergreen Products on Zazzle

Our recommended goal for your product suite.

What we recommend is that 80% of your products should be evergreen and 20% seasonal. We recommend this because it has worked for us. With 14 years of experience on Zazzle, we have seen consistent and predictable income by maintaining a product inventory of 80% evergreen products.

If you set yourself up with 80% evergreen products and they start to sell consistently, you will feel more secure and confident because you will be able to predict how much money you’ll make over time as well. This is when you can feel that your Zazzle business is truly a business and not a hobby.

Why You Need Evergreen Products to Profit on Zazzle: The Bottomline

Whether you are just starting your Zazzle business or if you’re a seasoned Zazzle designer, we encourage you to take a thorough inventory of your products and which products are selling. When you create a product inventory of 80% evergreen products in your store that consistently sell for you, you’ll be able to rely on Zazzle as a steady income source. Not to mention, you’ll sleep better at night!
