What can you do to help prepare yourself for or deal with situations in your business that challenge your mental health? This article helps answer these questions and provides resources and ways for you to achieve good mental health and well-being as an entrepreneur.
The Importance of Mental Health for Entrepreneurs
Your mental health, as an online entrepreneur, is always of the utmost importance, because it affects not only the success of your business but also the quality of life for you and your family.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health as both the absence of mental illness and the presence of well-being, living up to one’s potential, positive coping and adaptation, productivity, and community engagement (World Health Organization WHO).
In the past few years, it has also become a hot topic of discussion in the business world. The World Economic Forum recently published an article about how to tackle the mental health crisis in entrepreneurship. Over 580 million people (8% of the world’s population) are active entrepreneurs. That means they are either starting their own business, actively growing one, or dealing with maintaining or managing one.
Mental Health is Necessary for Entrepreneurial Success
The work of Michael Freeman, a psychiatrist, clinical professor at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, and mentor at the Entrepreneurship Center at UCSF are quoted a great deal because of his significant findings in his recent study.
At least 49 percent of entrepreneurs are likely to have a mental health episode, like a bout of depression, in their lifetime, according to a May 2018 study that Michael Freeman wrote with three other experts called “The Prevalence and Co-Occurrence of Psychiatric Conditions Among Entrepreneurs and Their Families.”
“Michael Freeman writes… “Mental health is as essential for knowledge work in the 21st century as physical health was for physical labor in the past. Creativity, ingenuity, insight, brilliance, planning, analysis, and other executive functions are often the cognitive cornerstones of breakthrough value creation by entrepreneurs.”
Why Entrepreneurs Have More Mental Health Issues
Emily Canal writes in her article published in Inc.com
“Freeman adds that most entrepreneurs are susceptible to episodes like depression and substance abuse, but he also frequently sees genetic conditions like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and diagnoses on the bipolar spectrum in entrepreneurs.”
“The reason for that is that the personality characteristics that lead to success in entrepreneurship are also featured in mental health conditions,” Freeman says. “People who have elevated levels of creativity, emotion, and energy are also more likely to be on the bipolar spectrum or deal with substance abuse–they are all kind of part of the package.”
There are 2 Types of Mental Health Conditions
“Freeman says there are two types of mental health conditions: One is what people are genetically predisposed to and the other is the result of an event. Either way, he believes that entrepreneurs can prepare for the difficult days ahead by taking some precautionary measures.” Inc.com
That means that there is hope and help for you.
Your brain has the capacity to fortify itself, to not only cope with but excel in this 21st-century entrepreneurial environment.
You just need the right tools and training.
What Can You Do to Improve Your Mental Health?
Thankfully, there is more help in this area of mental health now than there was in the past. There is no longer a stigma attached to having mental health issues. Rather it is important to control or manage it in order to succeed in business and flourish in your life.
There are many videos, books, and articles, including the ones mentioned above, that you can read to become more aware of your mental health status. If you feel that you want to improve your mental health, I have listed a few suggestions below:
- Seek professional help. Choose a practitioner who understands and has solutions for the specific implications and stressful situations associated with being a leader and entrepreneur.
- Do what you love and love what you do. Entrepreneurship is not easy. You must love what you do to have the right mindset to have any possibility of success while also being in a state of well-being..
- Maintain good physical health. Eat well. Avoid addictive substances of all kinds. Exercise regularly. Get enough sleep. Your body’s health affects your brain’s health.
- Improve your mental health. Learn how to achieve your peak mental fitness through training. Find tools and ways to compensate for your deficiencies. Learn and train yourself on how to deal with the many forms of stress associated with the highs and lows of entrepreneurship.
The Renewed Mind Training Can Improve Your Mental Health
In the past few years, an explosion of books and training programs on achieving better mental health have become available.
As an entrepreneur, I have found and tried many of these options.
One training program that stands out is called The Renewed Mind. It is unique because the training was developed by a psychologist with 40 years of experience and one of his patients, Robert Verbee, whom he helped overcome Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Even though the methods were initially directed to help people with PTSD, it became clear that this training can help people with any type of mental stress.
The Renewed Mind provides the tools to SPRING back to a healthy mind.
This program has not only helped me but also many other entrepreneurs improve their mental health and well-being.
I like it so much that I am now an affiliate for it and want to share a bit of the back story as to how it came about. As well, I would like to give you the opportunity to look into it a bit more in case it is something that you feel would help you with your mental fitness.
How can the SPRING Method Help You?
The Renewed Mind Training is based on the SPRING Method. Renewing your mind will help you erase the emotional scars that are holding you back. You will be able to recognize, cope and manage or even overcome mental health situations that you are faced with, big or small.
SPRING Method is an acronym for certain things you will achieve from the training:
- S – Strategies to help you cope.
- P – Persevere when times are tough.
- R – Reframe your thoughts.
- I – Increase your awareness.
- N – Navigate your self-talk.
- G – Generate higher income and better quality of life due to improved mental health
NOTE: The Renewed Mind Training will not help you if you are suicidal. If your situation is severe, then please contact the appropriate medical professionals to get the help you need.
The Creators of The Renewed Mind Training
The Renewed Mind was developed by Ruth and Robert Verbree along with a psychologist with 40 years of experience. Robert was one of his patients, who overcame Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Robert had a long career as a first responder. Ruth experienced firsthand the stresses of being married to a police officer. Together they have suffered much trauma and stress related to Robert’s line of work. And then they faced a new journey of despair when Robert began suffering from PTSD. This was at a time when PTSD was not well known and not much help was available.
Fortunately for them and for us, their journey to healing lead them to the psychologist who helped Robert get better. This also led to the creation of The Renewed Mind Training so that now others can benefit from The Renewed Mind.
A Sneak Peek Into The Renewed Mind Training
How will The Renewed Mind help you? Let’s look at the letter P – Persevere when times are tough.
There were days when Robert wanted to give up, but he persevered. He used the proven Combat Technique to work through his anxiety. Then he used The Serenity Technique to help him access the calm confidence that he needed. The Daily Mindfulness Techniques help him stay focused and in the present moment. The Clearing Strategies help him work through his limiting beliefs. The Guided Introspection Journaling Sheets, helped him to get his thoughts out on paper and proved to be a valuable way to persevere one day at a time.
On his journey to recovery, Robert was able to attain one small micro-goal each day. Because of each small “win,” he persevered and each day was a little better and a little bit brighter as he climbed out of the pit of despair back into the light.
Ruth also used the training to not only understand and support Robert on his journey to recovery but to be able to help herself. She was able to overcome the stresses associated with experiencing a loved one go through this ordeal.
Consider Using The Renewed Mind to Improve Your Mental Health
Whether you have had a serious mental health event happen in your life, like Robert, or you are just feeling the stress of life as an entrepreneur, The Renewed Mind can be your solution to renewing your mind to a state of well-being.
