When you see someone else doing something or living a life that you want for yourself, this can make you second guess yourself and your journey. Oftentimes when people see someone reaching a goal that they personally want but haven’t reached yet, they start feeling left behind.
When you feel left behind all kinds of emotions will start brewing. You’ll feel jealousy. You can become overwhelmed and feel sad. All of this emotional angst can really pull you into a negative space mentally and that can bring you down.
When these emotions come up it stops you from being able to be at your best. However, there are things that you can do to work through these feelings and stop comparing your journey to others!
Before you can work towards moving past the emotions that come along with feeling left behind it’s important to understand why we feel this way in the first place. So often we get in our heads about this idea of where we should be at certain points in our lives and if we aren’t there or haven’t reached certain goals then we feel like we are behind.
Many things can trigger it but some of the top triggers are:
– Your impression of what should happen and when events should happen.
– Milestones – like birthdays, births, deaths, graduation, age specific years, beginning of a new year, decade or big year like 2020.
– Other people’s life events changes or successes
– When you self-reflect and start to notice all of the things that are important to you that you haven’t achieved and you see there is a gap between where you are and where other people are.
Why does it happen despite our best efforts? Is it jealousy?
We carry our goals with us even if we aren’t always planning them out and executing them. This can create a false sense of responsibility to these goals, so when they don’t materialize it can bring up so many emotions and can trigger deep feelings.
These feelings aren’t jealousy although we feel morally pressured to believe that. It’s your inner drive realizing what you truly want from your life and these emotions are telling you that you’re meant for more.
Is this becoming a problem for you? You have to decide.
When you have these feelings it’s important to work through them and decide if something actually needs to change or if you need to change perspective. It’s important to self-reflect to see if it’s a true reflection of what’s actually going on. Or are you upset because you’re comparing your journey to someone else’s and you need to accept that everyone has their own path they take to reach their goals.
Most times these feelings come up because you are not following your own path, you’re following someone else’s. If this is a problem for you, we have some great tools to help you that we go deeper on in the podcast.
Feeling left behind is no way to live your life, it’s unnecessarily messing with you and it’s not going to help push you forward in life, it will only hold you back. This feeling can reach us even if we’re on the right path and working towards our goals. This is because our bodies can have a natural response and can get overwhelmed by external factors.
1. Trust how your life unfolds, and the choices you make. This is the hardest one to do but once you can trust in the opportunities and challenges that you face in life you will become so much more excited about the journey.
2. Stop comparing, judging yourself, and using others as a marker for where you should be in your life. Comparison will suck the happiness from your life, lower your self esteem and influence your life choices that may not be the best for you. Instead, put your blinders on and just focus on your future.
3. Go for the goals you want by following a proven plan and surround yourself with people that motivate you to achieve your goals without comparing others’ success to your own. We need a balance between taking the right action steps to achieve our goals and a healthy, positive environment in which to thrive to achieve our goals. The people you surround yourself with need to be inspirational to you without giving you feelings of being left behind or jealous of their success. That is why a group coaching environment is effective at reducing overwhelm and reducing the feeling of being left behind.
My intention with this podcast is for you to have a much better understanding of how to overcome that feeling of being left behind. We tend to compare ourselves to others and we think we should be so much further in our own journey, when in reality everyone will have different paths in life. You’re not as far behind as you think you are and you have total control over where your life takes you. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help to get you to where you want to be in life.
