In this post, I (Elke) am going to share answers to a burning question about Zazzle: How many products do you have to sell on Zazzle in order to start making sales?
It’s no secret that many sellers think there’s a magic number of products you need to have in order to start selling and earning an income. But as you’ll soon discover, the answer to this question is more complex than just a straightforward number.
But before we dive right in, let us introduce ourselves in case this is your first visit. Welcome to The Creative and Ambitious Entrepreneur Podcast. We’re your hosts, Jen and Elke Clarke. We are a mother and daughter team that started Zazzle e-commerce businesses over 10 years ago and have sold over 15 million dollars-worth and counting of products on Zazzle.
The Creative and Ambitious Entrepreneur Podcast is for you, the creative. We share actionable steps that you can take to make money in your e-commerce business. In each episode, we will take you one step closer to achieving freedom with your time, location, and finances.
We believe that a profitable e-commerce business is what opens the doors for you to start living your dream life if you work smarter, not harder, use the right tools and follow the proven roadmap. We’re here to give you the tools you need to make your dream life happen. Let’s get started!
Today we’re discussing how many products you need to offer to build a successful Zazzle storefront. You see, the secret to this is most likely not what you expect. You first need to analyze several factors within your niche and the customers you are serving. This data will help determine your conversion rate and dictate how many products you need.
The first tip for deciphering the right product number and making sales is to define your niche and your ideal avatar. “What do you mean by that?” you may be wondering. Well, you need to know the person you’re serving as a customer. If you do not have a clear idea of who you want to attract to your store, how can you know what they want and how much money they are willing to pay for that product or experience?
Furthermore, it is important to understand the volume of people that are willing to browse your products, let alone buy them. Gain insight into their preferences surrounding these products can help you make them more appealing. What materials do they like? What designs? What mediums do they want to buy your designs on?
When you figure out what your customer wants and you conduct the market research, you can then decipher a much clearer picture of what amount and types of products are needed to captivate your customer.
The next important factor to examine is whether your customers shop on Zazzle. You may have designs or products that would naturally sell well on other platforms, but your customers may not be familiar with Zazzle or are not accustomed to shopping there. This is, of course, very important to know.
If your ideal customers are not already shopping on Zazzle, that does not mean you won’t be able to sell in your store. Knowing this fact, however, will completely change your strategy of how to reach your customers. You will need to get creative in how you drive traffic from other sources and rely less on the Zazzle marketplace to attain the sale.
You also need to determine what your customer actually wants. And once you have an understanding of that, ask yourself how you can deliver that product or experience.
This may require shedding your “artist ego”. Sure, you may create art that people love. But that does not mean you can solely rely on the Zazzle marketplace to drive your sales. Chances are, you will need to drive traffic from external sources as well.
Zazzle customers are usually looking for something unique and different. This requires you to speak their language in terms of how they would find your product, using SEO and other tools to effectively tag products so that your customers can easily locate them.
When you do this, you can work toward a point where people are buying your products because they love the look of your art, but maybe not because they connect with you as an artist. That will come after their initial purchase, once they begin to know your art on a more personal level.
It can be tough to make these connections with customers and really understand what they want because on the Zazzle platform you are not interacting with them directly. You may need to perform additional market research to determine how things resonate with these customers.
Once you have a design and product combination that sells very well, you’ll be able to strategically decide what else you can transfer that to in order to sell more and add another product to your storefront. And since you have already done the research and gained an understanding of your customer, it will be much easier to make these calls.
This method can actually help you make more profit with fewer designs as you’re really targeting your audience and your customer, which is really exciting!
You can also create demand for your products in nontraditional ways that will bump your sales and visibility in the market.
The first way to do this is through promotion. Once you have assigned an effective SEO strategy for your products with their titles and tags, you will be ready to promote your products effectively. When you promote something that you know is intentional and your products are set up properly, this will give them the best chance to be searched and found.
You can promote your products on external sites, such as Pinterest or Instagram. These promotions will drive new audiences to your product pages and likely convert to more sales.
Another way to create demand is if you are coming onto Zazzle with an existing business where your audience already knows you. This allows your Zazzle storefront to act as an offshoot to your established business, allowing you to effectively merchandise your existing reputation and brand.
There are notable examples of individuals who came onto the Zazzle platform with existing followings and were able to quickly create demand for their products. One of these examples is the “grumpy cat” photo that went viral and has raked in TONS of sales ($99 million to be exact!).
These individuals saw huge success, and a lot of it was attributed to the fact that they had a built-in audience following them to their storefront from the start. That is a HUGE leg up on this platform.
At the end of the day, there are so many areas of opportunity for making money on Zazzle. And reaching those possibilities does not rely on the number of products you need to create in order to get rich quickly.
I hope this episode helped you realize that working smarter instead of harder on the platform and following the above tips will help you reach your customers and make sales. With every sale, you will gain a further understanding of how you can keep that momentum going and find success on Zazzle.
