In this post, I (Jen) am going to be talking about teaching young adults the benefits of starting an online business. When I was 18, my mother, Elke, helped me create my online business using Zazzle. Running my own online business helped open up possibilities for me that I had never imagined. If you’re someone who has children that are at the age where they can start learning about entrepreneurship, I’m going to walk you through my journey and how I got started.
At face value, running an online business makes a lot of sense. I have the freedom of location, freedom of financial time, and freedom of creativity. But running an online business has a lot more benefits than you may think. The life experiences that you gain can contribute to your life tremendously. While many young adults are internet savvy, they may not realize that they can start a business online and earn by using skills they already have. They might not realize the world of opportunity that is available to them, since it’s not taught in schools.
When I was at university, I didn’t quite know what my path was. I thought that I would get some kind of validation from picking a business major. But mostly, I felt a lot of pressure and didn’t totally know why I was pursuing a traditional education. Eventually, I dropped out and took time to learn from Elke. She taught me the benefits of starting an online business through Zazzle and I was able to apply some of the skills that I’d learned at university while also getting to use my creative side as well.
In school, I was taught to focus on the numbers side of business. I was lasered in on economics and calculus and other general business courses. Elke encouraged me to start an online business through Zazzle because she knew it would help teach me responsibility and how to use my own creativity as opposed to only looking at the numbers side of things.
After starting my online business, I saw the benefits immediately. A lot of my friends were exhausted from working physical jobs for an hourly wage while trying to stay on top of their studies. Because my business was online, I wasn’t as exhausted and had time to take care of myself and my workload. What I didn’t anticipate was that just those small steps into starting a business gave me the ability to understand the logistics of running an online business.
At university, they teach courses that eventually cover the logistical aspects of business, but they don’t focus on online spaces or about being your own boss on your own terms. Elke gave me the tools to start my Zazzle business at a young age, and it’s still working for me today. This isn’t to say that there is a place for formal education, but a traditional route might not be necessary for everyone.
Getting a head start when you’re in your late teens or early twenties can really give your business a lot. Now that I’m in my 30s, I have years of building my business behind me over someone who started recently. We have a lot of clients from The Profit by Design Academy™️ Coaching Program who are able to teach their children, even as young as 13 years old, how to start a business and that will benefit them for years to come.
There is a common misconception that you need to have lots of followers on a social media platform in order to have a successful online business. However, starting a Zazzle store doesn’t require you to be famous in any way. With The Profit by Design Academy™️ Coaching Program, we teach five main strategies that we used to start our million-dollar business.
Freedom of Time
Freedom of time means that you’re able to work on your business anytime you have free time. One struggle of being a young person is that your schedule is sporadic. This might include school, socializing, hobbies, or helping out with errands around the house. With an online business, you have the freedom to work whenever you want. If that means weekends, late nights, or early mornings, the schedule is flexible for you to be able to work when you can.
Freedom of Location
When you run an online business, you can work from anywhere in the world. Since you don’t have to physically be somewhere to work, you have the flexibility to work on your own schedule. Freedom of location cuts down on commute times and helps you earn the highest amount possible so that you don’t have to pay for equipment or leave your house to make money.
Freedom of Finances
Running an online business means that your earning potential isn’t limited to a minimum wage job. As a young person, your job options aren’t always very profitable. But with an online business, you have the potential to generate wealth at levels that aren’t possible with physical work.
Freedom of Creativity
Running an online business means that you’re the boss. You don’t have to work underneath anybody, and it gives you the freedom to work on the things that you are passionate about and feel the most excited about. Ultimately on Zazzle, the designs that sell the best are the ones that come from the heart.
Elke taught me how to use Zazzle from a young age, and it gave me so many opportunities I didn’t even know that I had. It allowed me to understand what I wanted to do as a career, shape my future in a way that I didn’t think was possible, be creative, and have business skills that allowed me to learn responsibility. You can start when you’re just 13 years old. It creates responsibility, goal setting, and you are setting yourself up for a successful financial future. You can save the money, use it to travel, or even put it away to buy a house later on. When you’re able to implement and expand your knowledge, you’re able to be the best person you can be.
