There comes a point in time when you start to ask yourself deep and thoughtful questions about why you want to achieve certain goals and aspirations financially. What are you aiming for? Time freedom? Financial stability? Creative freedom? What makes you feel fulfilled by what you are doing in your business? What is your why in life? Why do you make certain decisions? Is it to make yourself happy? To support your family? Or maybe it is some other reason that you are really passionate about. We all have personal reasons or a “why” in our lives. Your “why” will influence how you act, the choices you make, the business risks you take, and your drive and determination to succeed.
What Is Your Why in Life?
Elke Clarke, my mom, and top Zazzle earner, and I, Jen Clarke, teach and mentor creative entrepreneurs how to make money online using Zazzle, an eCommerce platform. In this article, one of our course members and fellow Zazzle designers, Erica Husband, has graciously shared her WHY with us. Erica is an extremely passionate and creative person who decided to start making money online to support her family. She saw the opportunities that making money online would give her, and she decided that pursuing a career in it was best for her family. Her ‘why’ pushed her in this direction because she knew that staying at home and supporting her family was a huge priority in her life. Read on to find out about her story. We know you will be able to relate. Erica’s story will give you a better understanding of the power of “why” and its importance in making decisions in your life and in your business.
Erica’s “Why”: Being at Home to Support Her Family and Children

Erica, what is your ‘why’ and what made you decide to stay at home?
Erica:
I am a mom of three boys who are all diagnosed with autism and I made the decision to stay at home to look after them. It was less costly than paying for daycare. Since 1998, when my oldest son was born, I had been trying to find something to supplement our income so that I could stay at home with my children full-time.
My husband worked many jobs so that I could stay at home, but I felt like I needed to contribute to the household income in some way and also give him some relief so he did not need to work so much. I decided that working online was the way I could stay at home, but also help out my husband financially.
The Search to Find the Right Platform
Jen:
How did you start making money online?
Erica:
In early 2010, I opened an Etsy shop selling my handmade bracelets. Etsy made me money, but it wasn’t more than $1,000 a year. Everything was just so saturated in the marketplace. It wasn’t giving me what I was looking for in order to help my husband out financially. Not to mention, I was also making all the products myself by hand, and it was much more time-consuming than I wanted it to be, and actually took me away from my boys, which defeated the very thing I wanted. I wanted to spend more time with them, not less.
I wasn’t enjoying what I was doing anymore, so I went looking for other options to make money online. There was CafePress and Society6, and I opened shops on both platforms. I looked more into Zazzle after being in a group that gives out gift bags with handmade items and product placement. A few members of this group had their own Zazzle stores, so I started doing research on the platform. I had even heard a radio announcement for Zazzle, which intrigued me even more.

What do you like about Zazzle?
Erica:
What I loved about Zazzle was that I could just take my design and put it on an already-made product. Their unique print-on-demand platform allowed me to eliminate the problem I was having with production on Etsy. I loved that the products are 100% customizable as well, which other platforms didn’t offer. What was amazing too, was that I could take one design and put it on multiple products to give a variety of options to my customers.
They did all the printing, and production, and also handled customer service and shipping! This was huge for me. It gave me the ease of less stress and more time to be creative and even more importantly, more time with my boys.
