Opening your own Zazzle store is a great online business opportunity. Zazzle is “a platform and ecosystem of Designers, Makers, Brands, and Customers – where everything is made on demand”. I run my online business by being under the “Designer” category on Zazzle. Since 2007, I have sold over $8 million worth of products with my designs on them via my Zazzle stores and earned over $850,000 US. For each of the past 5 years, I have consistently earned a 6 figure online income. Zazzle is a great business model for anyone wanting to begin to sell their creativity online.
7 Reasons Why a Zazzle Store is a Great Online Business
What is Zazzle?
It is not your typical e-commerce site because Zazzle is passionate about supporting this creative ecosystem of Designers, Makers, Brands, and the Customer. There are several ways you can use Zazzle to earn money.
There are affiliate earning opportunities promoting over 550 Name Brands like Disney, Marvel, DC, Getty Images, Coca-Cola, and Hallmark.
The interactive customization platform allows for “Makers” like Chocomize, Planet Charm, CaseMate, and Bears for Humanity, to use Zazzle’s international reach of millions of visitors, to sell unique one-of-a-kind products.
Then there are “Designers”, like me, which includes anyone who signs up for a Zazzle store and posts products for sale in the Zazzle Marketplace, all FOR FREE.
Designers can come from all walks of life and have different skill levels and interests. They can be artists, photographers, graphic designers, pattern surface artists, typographers, scrapbookers, and more, but they can also be people who have a hobby or specialize in a niche, like vintage art prints.
Zazzle provides thousands of “blank” products to add your designs to and post in your virtual store. Once someone buys a product, it is printed and shipped by Zazzle and the Designer is paid the royalty they set for the item.
7 Reasons Why a Zazzle Store is a Great Online Business Opportunity
1. Freedom of Time
You can work flexible hours, choose when you work and for how long you want to work.
Freedom of time is so important to me. It is the number one reason why I started on Zazzle. I watched my kids’ soccer games. I was there for them when they got home from school. My kids and I did so many things together that would not be possible if I was working at an office job. Once they were at school, I would work on Zazzle.
The time I spent with my kids at key moments in their lives is irreplaceable. My online business on Zazzle made it possible.
Recently, a family member was ill. It meant so much to me that I could help them for as long as they needed. Taking 3 months off work would be hard in a regular office job.
While I took care of my sick relative full-time, I still earned money from my Zazzle store.
2. Unlimited Income Potential
When I was in the workforce, I worked long hours and always outperformed my last year’s accomplishments. Even though I received the best raise possible, it was not what I was hoping for, and felt stuck. I realized that even the boss, was not making as much money as I wanted to make! There was an earnings “ceiling”.
I wanted a business that let me benefit from my hard work with no restrictions on how much I earned. Opening my own Zazzle store was a great online business opportunity for me that is now providing me with the income I want.
Zazzle, through the royalty earnings from product sales and associate (or affiliate) earnings from referrals, provides me with unlimited income potential.
It took me a while to become established, but since starting in 2007, I have continually increased my yearly income on Zazzle, making over 6 figures for the past 5 years.
You can see my earnings summary in the above image. I have already made a 6 figure income in 2016 even without the December payout.
3. Work from Anywhere There is Internet
Zazzle is a great online business because it is “location independent”. Imagine, not only having the freedom to work from home, but also anywhere in the world that has Internet.
- No more long commutes in crippling traffic.
- No more risking your life to get to work in bad weather, just so you can be in an office.
- Work in your own environment where you are more creative and productive.
- Work while traveling to exotic places to escape cold winters.
- No need to worry about being back to work after your 2-week vacation. You can take your work with you and stay on vacation as long as you want.
I am truly grateful that I don’t have to drive to an office in terrible snowstorms in the winter months anymore.
Last summer I spent the most amazing 3 months in Europe while running my online business on Zazzle.
4. Maintain Your Creative Freedom
If you have ever tried to license your artwork or photography, you will have realized the limitations on what you have to “produce” or “create”. On Zazzle, there are no restrictions on what you post on a product for sale. Obviously, there are still general restrictions, such as nothing slanderous, derogatory, and infringing on copyright to name a few.
But on Zazzle, you are free to be as creative as you want. Sell as many different design niches and styles as you want, when you want.
The wonderful thing about Zazzle is that you can test the market without incurring any inventory and production costs. You can post multiple different designs on products for sale. If none sell, you have not lost more than your time to post the products.
You can test markets for the salability of niches and designs with only the investment of your time.
5. Cost Effective – It’s Free!
You can incur many costs in running your own brick-and-mortar store including inventory and production costs. Even if you run your own online website store, you still need to manage inventory, complete product fulfillment, provide customer service, do the accounting, maintain your website, do the marketing and promotion and handle day-to-day issues that come up. Somewhere in your busy day you also have to come up with the designs you will sell on your products.
With a Zazzle store, all you need to do is post products for sale with your designs on them and receive your monthly payments.
The only investment you make in your Zazzle business is your time.
Since you have fewer responsibilities compared to a regular business, you can be more productive and focused on creating your inventory to sell.
6. Extensive Product Options
Choose from thousands of product types on Zazzle to add your designs for sale. There are no restrictions to the number of any product type you sell. You can have a store with all cell phone cases or a store with just stationery products or have both or any other combination or permutation. The choice is yours. Recently, Zazzle limited each username to 100,000 products, but that is still an incredibly large product inventory to have at no storage cost to you.
The wide variety of product types Zazzle offers means Designers can target many different consumer markets.
7. Access to Millions of International Customers
A store on Zazzle is a great online business because, as the seller, you have access to Zazzle’s established website with millions of customers worldwide. Zazzle has a web presence in 16 countries and has the infrastructure to print and ship to international customers. It would take years for you as a start-up business to obtain such a wide customer base.
Zazzle gives you instant access to its worldwide customer base of millions of visitors per month.

That’s great to hear Elke, but what I really want to know is systematically how you did it and what you do to achieve it. Everyone offers a lot of generalized information and I am looking for information that I can dig my teeth into. I am getting closer to retirement and I need to generate a better income to add to my social security. But I can’t seem to figure it out. I guess I’m not a good marketer, but I work hard at it and never give up. Perhaps I’m in the wrong business.
Did you invest a bunch of money into it from your previous job? When you create a product or say collection, what do you do to promote it. What does a typical promotion look like to generate big sales, or does most of it come from smart affiliating. I have been on Zazzle since 2005. My designs are good but I don’t make over $150. per month. I don’t know where best to put my focus, and I don’t have a lot of money. I would love to see a case study for example of a design and set of products from inception to profits, and know what you did. Is there an algorithm you have figured out?? What is your magic??
Thanks, Elke… I’ve worked as a graphic designer, illustrator and copywriter for years, and Zazzle seems like what I was meant to do…hoping to really continue to ramp up my store, and add a couple stores that are more specifically themed.
Any advice for the best route to take for online promotion would be good – I do social media for my employer, and get good results for them – but for my zazzle stuff, I feel like my friends totally resist my posts (which are few and far between)…I’ve started posting on Pinterest, and really don’t know if it’s driving any business to me – but lots of my sales are labeled as 3rd party referrals….anyway, thanks for your posts, and any suggestions are always helpful.

Thanks for sharing. I have a question. Sincere you have great success on Zazzle, do you consider to have a store on your own website to sell directly to make more profits? What is the advantages and disadvantage to sell on Zazzle and own website? Thanks.
Hi Elke, Congratulations on your success! And thanks for sharing your experiences. Can you tell me if the sales numbers you shared are for Zazzle products only, or does it also include your marketing classes, books, etc.? I imagine that quite a number of sellers find your insight valuable, and hopefully, the marketing side of your business is very profitable for you too. Thanks!
Hi, Elke! You really have inspired me to do more with my Zazzle stores! I was wondering if you offer a course that helps not just beginners. I have been on Zazzle for a few years now and would like to get more serious about it. I have a lot of questions about tags and product creation and such. I intend to try to revamp my stores a bit after the holidays but I am not sure of what to tackle first. Your 7 days to success sounds great but not quite what I am looking for. I did download your other ebook and read it. Thanks so much for that!!! I am just planning ahead and want to get my stores in shape and have a plan in motion and since you have motivated me so much I thought you would be the perfect person to go to!
Thanks!!!
