Jen and Elke Clarke | 4 Ways to Sell Your Surface Patterns on Zazzle

Can you make money selling your surface pattern design online on Zazzle? My daughter, Jen Clarke, and I, Elke Clarke, get asked this question a lot because we are E-Commerce Business Coaches. We own million-dollar E-Commerce online businesses and use Zazzle to make money online. You can definitely sell your surface pattern design online on Zazzle. It can be more profitable than selling; digital patterns on Creative Market, your physical products on Etsy, or any other POD like Spoonflower, TeeSpring, RedBubble, or Society6. It can be confusing with all the options out there. Jen and I will show you why Zazzle is the best online option and 4 ways you can start selling your surface pattern design online right away to make money.

Why Zazzle is the Profitable Way to Sell Surface Pattern Design

You love making surface patterns. We love them too. There is just something magical about working with your hands and creating a beautiful physical item. If you design surface patterns digitally, then it is the most amazing feeling to see your pattern on a physical object.

But how does this help you as a creative pay your rent? Ultimately you must sell your creation. Do you sell it once and make some money OR do you sell it many times and make much more money? I choose more money, less work.

What if you could make money even years later from that one creation? I am known for my choosing businesses where I “work once, get paid often”. It fits in well with my Business Framework “Perceivable, Passive, Profitable™”. Why not receive payments passively over and over again for something you did once? That’s where the right online platform and a digital copy of your pattern come into play. Hello Zazzle!..a POD (Print on Demand)

What is Zazzle?

Zazzle (zazzle.com) is an E-Commerce online shopping site where customers can buy products designed by Brand Names and independent designers (that means you 😉).

As an independent designer, you can open up a virtual store for free and add your surface patterns and other creative designs (photography, artwork, graphic designs) onto products virtually. Once a customer buys the product Zazzle prints and ships it to the customer, hence…print on demand.

Zazzle pays you a royalty on the sale of your design.

Zazzle Does Most Things, So Your Profit is Higher

There are thousands of product options on Zazzle that you can add to your surface patterns. You can set your own royalty (5% to 99%).

You do not have to deal with:

  • sourcing and paying for materials
  • taking the time to create the physical product
  • shipping
  • customer billing
  • Customer service
  • website creation
  • etc.

That’s why it is so profitable to sell on Zazzle, compared to other online options.

Jen and I keep 85% – 90% of our royalty payments because our only expenses are internet, laptop, and time. The Zazzle business model is extremely profitable.

What Makes Zazzle Better Than Other PODs?

Let’s compare Zazzle to other PODs like RedBubble, Society6, Teepublic, and Threadless.

The other PODs each allow you to sell clothing but are limited to certain styles, fabrics, and quality. Some have other product options that you can sell your surface patterns on too.

But Zazzle has the largest product selection to add surface patterns on to like:

  • Wide selection of clothing and accessories
  • masks
  • fabric
  • home decor
  • party goods
  • business and stationery supplies
  • sports, games, hobbies
  • edibles
  • wall art and memorabilia
  • etc.

Zazzle is the best platform to create more complicated designs with your surface patterns such as adding text and shapes. This is because of Zazzle’s unique Design Tool which you can set so the customer can customize the text as well. The possibilities are endless.

Why You Will Be More Profitable on Zazzle Than Etsy and Spoonflower

Is it costly and time-consuming when you make your own products to sell on Etsy? Once you sell your physical product, you have to make another to earn more money. That’s not passive income. And what about your profits? Are they being eaten away because of material costs? What about the time it takes you to make the product? The time spent dealing with customers, billing, shipping, and follow-up? What do you make per hour with all this extra effort?

Do you like that you have to buy your own pattern or compete in design contests in order to sell on Spoonflower? Wouldn’t you rather spend that extra time putting up more products to sell on Zazzle?

On Zazzle, you don’t have to buy materials or your patterns or enter any contest (Spoonflower) in order to sell products in the Zazzle marketplace.

Your limit is 100K. That’s a lot of products that can be working for you passively, selling at no cost to you except your initial time to add your designs to the products and promote them.

First Way to Sell Your Surface Pattern Design on Zazzle and Profit

Add your surface pattern design to masks.

Right now we are in uncertain times with COVID-19 or coronavirus. Zazzle pivoted quickly and retooled its facilities to create and sell protective masks.

In the last 2 months, our course students (The Profit by Design Academy™,) have made mask sales in the thousands. Imagine if you had to fulfill those yourself! On Zazzle, you don’t have to do that. Zazzle does it for you.

One student sold 10,000 masks. That is a royalty payout of $5,000!!

That is purely passive income.

One design was uploaded to one mask, one time, and it sold 10,000 times with a $5,000 payout.

Some of the most popular mask designs are unique patterns. Hint Hint!

Second Way to Sell Your Surface Pattern Design on Zazzle and Profit

Sell your surface patterns as is on the thousands of products that Zazzle offers:

  • Print All-Over Clothing and accessories
  • Fabric
  • Home Decor
  • Wall Art
  • Electronic Cases
  • And more….

The possibilities are endless to expand your product inventory and reach more customers.

Zazzle is known as the site to go to for unique designs.

This results in more sales and higher royalty payouts for you.

Third Way to Sell Your Surface Pattern Design on Zazzle and Profit

Zazzle has a unique customization Design Tool and interfaces that you can use to create cool customized designs with your surface patterns. That means you have more options to use your surface patterns than just “as is”.

Can you say, “MORE SALES!”?

It also means you can use your surface pattern designs on items used for holidays, occasions, business, games, hobbies, etc.

Take your surface pattern and add a name, monogram, or initial on it or use-specific text.

Jen and I have had great success on Zazzle creating products that the customer can personalize.

Did we mention the two of us combined have made over 1.5 million dollars selling on Zazzle? That’s not sales, that’s the payout. At 85% – 90% profit, that’s some nice bank over the years as passive income.

Fourth Way to Sell Your Surface Pattern Designs on Zazzle and Profit

Besides earning a royalty that you can set (5% to 99%), you can also earn a referral and an affiliate (Zazzle calls it associate). This can be 15% OR 35%.

Imagine you sold a queen duvet cover that had your surface pattern design on it for $126. You would earn a 10% ($12.60) royalty from the sale. Let’s say that you brought the customer to Zazzle through your promotion. If you signed up for Zazzle’s The Promoter Program 2.0 you would also receive a 35% affiliate commission on this sale ($44.10).

That brings your total earnings for this one sale to $56.70!

If you have a huge following on social media, the potential to promote and send customers to Zazzle to purchase your items is huge.

But even if you don’t have a huge following like Jen and I did, we show our students in The Profit by Design Academy™, our key organic promotion strategies that we used to generate passive, profitable income.

The 4 Ways to Sell Your Surface Pattern Designs on Zazzle and Profit

To summarize, Zazzle is definitely a platform to check out and see if it suits your business framework. When Jen and I investigated Zazzle it met our Business Framework: Perceivable, Passive, Profitable™.

The 4 ways to sell your surface pattern designs on Zazzle and profit are:

  1. Sell Masks – it’s a huge boom right now and you can easily profit
  2. Add your surface pattern designs “as is” to products that are popular
  3. Create more complex designs with surface patterns by adding text etc.
  4. Promote and sell your own designs to earn an additional 35% of affiliate income
